For the elderly

Since 2003

  • Free medication for 74 000 low-income seniors
  • The option to split retirement income will make a couple with one retirement income of $40 000 eligible for a tax cut of $878.

With the 2007-2008 Budget

  • Increase in retirement income giving entitlement to the tax credit from $1 000 to $1 500. Over 356 000 retirees will receive this tax relief.
  • Government support for phased retirement: the rules governing pension plans must be eased to make gradual withdrawal from the labour market more advantageous.
  • New tax credit of up to $500 for volunteers who provide respite services to informal caregivers: an innovative measure aimed at providing respite to informal caregivers

  • Introduction of the most generous parental insurance plan in North America
  • Attainment of the government’s objective of making 200 000 reduced-contribution daycare spaces available through the creation of 36 000 new spaces

With the 2007-2008 Budget

  • Recurring support of $3 million for 250 community drop-in daycare centres
  • Introduction of a tax credit to encourage education savings. Each annual contribution of $2 000 will give entitlement to a tax credit of up to $250, which will be added to the registered education savings plan.
  • Enhancement of the tax credit for the treatment of infertility
